AMPK/mTOR activation→neuronal protection→vascular dementia improvement
Atorvastatin ameliorates vascular dementia through the AMPK/mTOR pathway, improving neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity in addition to its cerebrovascular protective effects; both in vivo and in vitro evidence from 2023 support this mechanism. Vascular dementia is a distinct entity from Alzheimer's disease and warrants independent evaluation.
“Aim In this study, the protective effects of atorvastatin calcium (AC) on nerve cells and cognitive improvement in vivo and in vitro were investigated by establishing cell models and vascular dementia (VD) rat models.”
